Dental Implant Surgery

What Is Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implant surgery is the most advanced and successful way to replace missing natural teeth that have been lost due to tooth or gum disease. The surgery involves placing metallic anchoring devices into the tooth sockets / jaw bone, that would eventually support a dental crown.

Why Is Dental Implant Surgery Done?

Often, teeth are lost or extracted because of advanced gum disease or decay. Failure to replace these teeth may lead to disturbed dental relationships, reduced chewing efficiency and poor esthetics. The best solution is to replace these teeth by means of prostheses supported by dental implants.

What Dental Implant Surgery Can / Can’t Do

  • Can
  • Restore missing teeth
  • Give a “natural tooth-like” feel during biting
  • Improve your chewing efficiency
  • Can’t
  • Bring back your natural teeth. But it is the next best thing

How Should You Prepare For This Surgery?

  • It requires planning to assess bone volume and quality before implant placement. Consult with your surgeon to discuss your case before surgery
  • Sometimes, if bone is deficient, you may need additional procedures like bone grafting or sinus lift before implant surgery
  • Discuss any medical illnesses, if you have, with your doctor
  • Stop smoking for at least 2 weeks before the surgery
  • Get an oral prophylaxis (scaling) 1 week before surgery to improve oral hygiene and surgical outcome

What is the Procedure of Dental Implant Surgery?

dental implant surgery A single tooth dental implant surgery is a simple day-care procedure performed under local anesthesia. It involves raising a small gum flap to insert the dental implant into the prepared tooth socket, followed by closing with one or two stitches.

The implant may be placed immediately after the tooth extraction or a few weeks later, depending on the case. Once the implant has fused with the bone, the crown is then fixed on top of the implant to completely restore the tooth.

The dental implants used at our center are of premium quality, are long-lasting and have the highest success rate.

Recovery After Dental Implant Surgery?

  • It is a simple procedure, with a speedy recovery
  • Mild swelling may be seen for up to 7-10 days after the procedure in some cases
  • Solid foods and heavy exercise are to be avoided for 7 days after the surgery
  • Normal diet and lifestyle may resume after 1 week
  • Regular saline rinses are advised to maintain wound hygiene

Risk involved in Dental Implant Surgery?

If not performed by an expert, it may lead to:

  • Poor esthetics of the tooth
  • Implant failure
  • Wound infection
  • Permanent lip numbness
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
